



Event Intro
CSA has been awarded the opportunity to host the 2020 USA Swimming Open Water Western Zone Championships for the second year in a row. All athletes must qualify for the event based on the time qualification standards listed under the general information section below. This is a USA Swimming sanctioned event and thus requires all athletes to be a registered USA Swimming member.
This event is a qualification event for USA Swimming's Junior and Senior National Championships. Swimmers who finish Top-3 in the Open 5 km race will be eligible for a spot to compete at Nationals. Our 15-16 boys and girls finishing Top-5 in the 5 km race will be eligible for Junior National Championships. Our 13-14 boys and girls finishing Top-5 in the 3 km race will be eligible for Junior National Championships.
After the event all results will be posted on this event website as well as the selected National Team Members for Junior and Senior Nationals in April of 2021. General Info

RULES: Current USA Swimming Rules will govern the event. Please see Part Seven of the USA Swimming Rules and Regulations for a complete list of Open Water Rules. All swimmers should be under the direction of a USA Swimming licensed coach during the event, including warm-down. LSCs and Coach please see event entries for further details relating to athletes participation.
ELIGIBILITY: All swimmers must be USA Swimming Members. USA Swimming numbers will be required during online registration (link provided below). Participating LSCs: Alaska, Arizona, Central California, Colorado, Hawaii, Inland Empire, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Pacific Swimming, Pacific Northwest, San Diego Imperial, Sierra Nevada, Snake River, Southern California, Utah, Wyoming.

MEET LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS:
Silver Strand State Beach (Bayside) in Coronado California. 5000 CA-75, Coronado CA 92118

PARKING: Participants and spectators will park at Silver Strand State Beach parking lot on the ocean side. Parking is $10. A detailed events map will be sent out to all athletes, coaches and LSCs one week prior to the event.
OPEN WATER: This event will be swam in the San Diego Bay and will be a salt water course. The average water temperature for September is ~72 degrees Fahrenheit with an ambient air temperature averaging ~73 degrees Fahrenheit.

- Swimmers will start in water and will execute an "in-water" finish.
- There are ample viewing areas for spectators and coaches to watch athletes compete throughout the races.
Registration: All individual entries will be done online. Please fill out the registration form entirely. Your USA Swimming Number will be required. Please make sure to have it available prior to registering. Any swimmer registered without a valid USA Swimming Number will be charged an additional $10 clerical research fee for failure to produce the appropriate information for verification of qualification. No registrations will be taken on site.

Ages of Athletes: The age of an athlete is determined by the athlete’s age as of December 31, 2020. All athletes must compete within their respective age group and are only eligible for events offered to his/ her’s age (ex. a 12 year old may not compete in the 5km race because the minimum age requirement is 13). Any athletes 17 and older will be placed in the open division for their respective race.
Individual Event Entries: LSCs and/or teams may choose to register all their swimmers in a single transaction with our online registration or swimmers may enter individually . If LSCs/ Teams cannot send a coach representative with their swimmer/s but have athletes who would like to compete, after the athlete registers please contact coachtroyn@gmail.com and Coronado Swim Association will ensure those athletes have appropriate coaching oversight and receive all appropriate information regarding the safe execution of their races. If swimmers are registering for an event individually and require a coach representative please select "I need a coach" during registration and again CSA will gladly assist any swimmers in need of a coaching representative. Please know all athletes attending the event without a coach/ LSC representative will still proudly represent his/her LSC during the championship.
Warm-Ups/ Down: An area adjacent to the race course will be available for athletes to warm-up or down. Warm-ups will open at 7 am on 12 SEPT 2020.
Early (Pre-Race) Check-In: There will be an opportunity for coaches and athletes to conduct Early Check-In on Friday 11 September. Location and details will be emailed out, once finalized with the City of Coronado but coaches and athletes can expect Early Check-In from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
Race-Day Check-In: Check-In will Open at 7:00 AM. Coaches may choose to Check-In all their athletes or individual swimmers may Check-In on their own. All athletes are expected to be On-Site 20 minutes prior to expected start time of their race.

A thorough safety plan is nest with CA State Parks and USA Swimming. Key information for general public is below:
Water Craft: The use of water crafts of any kind (PWC, SUPs, Kayaks etc) are NOT permitted by LSCs, Teams or Coaches. The employment of watercraft will only be authorized by the Event Director in conjunction with the safe execution of the event.
Athlete Conduct: Athletes can expect contact with other swimmers during open water races, however any athlete observed engaging other swimmers inappropriately or with complete disregard to safety and lacking good sportsman like conduct will be removed from the race (actions include but not limited to: physically grabbing other swimmers, scratching etc). Swimmers are expected to maintain a positive attitude and engage other athletes with respect.
Adverse Weather (Wx): Independent Safety Observer and Head Guard will have final authority over changes in Wx conditions and the execution of races.
Coaches / LSC Reps: Coaches and LSC Representatives will receive a thorough safety brief during the coaches meeting. This will include a Course Safety Briefing Sheet that all coaches will be expected to deliver line-by-line to all their athletes. 10 minutes prior to the start of each race swimmers will receive a Safety brief review including being asked specific questions pertaining to safety to ensure swimmers fully understand proper procedures.
Photography, Video recording & Drones: Meet management reserves the right to restrict the use of photography and video recording in spectator areas if necessary. The use of any kind of digital photography or recording is prohibited in restricted areas as designated by Meet management. The use of drones is strictly prohibited in and around the competition venue. All Drones require extensive permits in the greater San Diego area due to commercial and military flight restrictions, please do not attempt the use of any drone during this competition. Use of audio or visual recording devices, including a cell phone, is not permitted in changing areas, restrooms or locker rooms.
Scoring: Individual events will be scored in the standard 20 - 1 point system with Top-16 swimmers earning points for their respective LSCs.
Awards: Top 8 swimmers in Age Group events will receive medals. Top 3 swimmers for Open will receive medals.
NATIONAL QUALIFICATION EVENT
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION FOR 5 KM EVENT
The 5km Race will be the qualifying race for USA Swimming National Selection for all ages groups at 2020 Open Water Western Zone Championships.

10K Qualification:
- Finished in the top 10 at the 2020 (pending execution) USA Swimming 10K or 5K National Championships
5K Qualification:
- Finished in the top 10 at the 2020 (pending execution) USA Swimming 10K or 5K National Championships, or;
- Finished in the top 5 at the 2020 (pending execution) USA Swimming 5K Junior National Championships, or;
- Finished in the top 3 at a 2020-2021 USA Swimming Open Water Zone Championship (5K or greater), or;
- Finished in the top 5 at the 2020 CSCAA 5K National Championships
7.5K Qualification (16-17 Age Group):
- Finished in the top 15 at the 2020 (pending execution) USA Swimming 10K or 5K National Championships, or;
- Finished in the top 10 at the 2020 (pending execution) USA Swimming 5K Junior National Championships, or;
- Finished in top 5 at a 2020-2021 USA Swimming Open Water Zone Championship (5K or greater) amongst athletes in their respective age division. (The race director of each Zone Championship will be responsible for submitting the names of the athletes who qualify).

TRAVEL
If teams are interested in AirBnB, Bayside Landing Community in Imperial Beach, CA, less than 3 miles south of the competition venue is an excellent option for traveling teams. CSA has reached out to all the AirBnB / Vacation Rental properties within Bayside Landing to inquire about availability. Most properties are still available for the event weekend.
Hotel Recommendations: San Diego is a destination city and therefore has ample hotels which can accommodate teams and athletes. Recommendations are made based of convenience and proximity to the event. San Diego has a variety of hotels and resorts available to participants and teams. The cost of these accommodations vary greatly depending on location. CSA is still working with local hotels to acquire a special events price for our participants, should participants want to make travel arrangement sooner the below accommodations is CSA’s strong recommendations. There are also a number of other small boutique hotels in Coronado that also have our strong recommendation.

PRE-RACE WATER TIME
Teams looking to travel into the San Diego area on Friday 27 September or early on Saturday 28 September, CSA can work to acquire pool space and training time for LSCs and Teams. If enough teams are interested in a Saturday pool practice or even an open water venue CSA can make arrangements.
